He's the joint top scoring English born player in English football this season but it looks like Joe Garner could soon have an opportunity to reassess his allegiances.
The Preston North End striker has represented England up to U19 level but according to the Irish Post, the FAI are doing some digging in the anticipation of being able to call on the 26 year old for Ireland.
He's still trailing Eoin Doyle in the League 1 goalscoring charts but his 20 league goals so far this season put him level with Watford's Troy Deeney and Swindon's Andy Williams as the top scoring Englishmen in the top four leagues of English football.
Members of Martin O'Neill's backroom team were apparently tipped off to his availability and the FAI are said to be checking into Garner's eligibility given that he has relatives living in Galway. Given the emergence of David McGoldrick and Cyrus Christie as part of the Ireland set-up this season, it's certainly possible that Garner could be another name on O'Neill's long-list.
