The club, originally called Altintug were founded in Istanbul in 1921.
They play in the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Stadium, which holds 13,500. The stadium is named after the current Turkish Prime Minister who is a native of the area.
They have has risen from the Fourth Tier of Turkish football in 2005 to the Super Lig after four succesive promotions.
After starting this season excellently, former manager Metyin Diyadin was sacked with the team in second place. The club statement regarding his sacking, "The parting of ways with Diyadin is in accordance with the new principles of our company [team]. Looking at the standings we are second, therefore our decision has got nothing to do with the current situation of the team. But the league is long and so it is incumbent upon us to plan ahead."
