The Baffling Case Of Sergio Aguero And The PFA Team Of The Year

It's a scoring ratio that sounds more like it's from La Liga than the Premier League. It just shows how devastating Sergio Aguero has been in his 147 games in England that he already has 100 league goals. That ranks him as the second fastest ever to reach that mark - behind Alan Shearer, and ranks him as the best goals-per-minute in the competition's history.

So why isn't he more recognised by the league? In the five years that Aguero has been with Manchester City - he has a single nomination for the PFA Player of the Year, and no appearances on the PFA Team of the Year.

It's something that Manuel Pellegrini is baffled by, and the club's officials are outraged at. Pellegrini, who has gotten the best out of his compatriot said:

It’s difficult for me to know why in five years he’s never been the best player.

In other seasons, maybe people didn’t vote for him because of the injuries. But he’s demonstrated in every game he deserves to be in.

Is that fair, or has the Argentine been hard done by? It's arguable that Aguero got his nomination in 2011-12 wasn't even his best season. The 23 goals in 34 games, including that memorable last gasp winner to secure the title over United, was enough to earn him that nomination - but Arsenal's Robin van Persie was at his peak scoring 30 goals in 38 games and carrying the Gunners on his back finishing 19 points behind the champions in third place. Wayne Rooney (27 goals in 34 games) and van Persie probably deserved their places ahead of Aguero in the team of the year.

Aguero was most blighted by injury in his following two seasons, scoring just 12 in 30 in 2012/13, and 17 goals in 23 in 2013/14. That impressive, but short 2013/14 season happened to coincidence with the year Luis Suarez took over at Liverpool, and the Uruguayan won the PFA Player of the Year and joined Daniel Sturridge in the team of the year.

But the striker has been outstanding in the last two seasons - a phenomenal record of 26 goals in 33 games wasn't rewarded at all. Eden Hazard was the unanimous choice for the top player of the season - but Aguero should surely have been among the best XI? Chelsea's Diego Costa and Spurs' Harry Kane were given that honour in their debut seasons in the league.

The perception this year was that Aguero started the season in fantastic form, before another injury halted him. Even still, Aguero has 22 goals in just 27 games, and is in line to at least match last year's total. Is that as good as Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy's efforts?

Apparently not if he's not even nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.
