With Manchester United forced to reshuffle their deck in the wake of four serious injuries yesterday, the stage was set for one Radamel Falcao. The Colombian centre-forward - starved of first team appearances for the majority of the season - was named as United's lone striker up against the side he tortured with a hat-trick in the 2012 European Super Cup Final.
Despite United bossing possession, Falcao continued his consistent level of listless performances for Louis Van Gaal's side. He struck the post with his one clear cut chance but mostly provided a very comfortable evening for Gary Cahill and John Terry.
Daniel Storey's always excellent 16 conclusions from Football 365 laid out the incredible investment United have made in Falcao and the now embarrassing return they have got for that investment:
Falcao's last shot on target in the Premier League came on January 31. Manchester United have paid him £2.95m since then.
Remarkable. One can only hope 'El Tigre' starts anew somewhere else and rediscovers just a little of the magic that made him such a lethal striker once upon a time.
