TG4 has been vital in showcasing Irish womens' sport over the past number of years. They've been a consistant broadcaster in showing a number of sports regardless of the level. Gaelic Football, AIL Women's Rugby, InterPro Rugby, Camogie and the Women's League of Ireland have all been broadcasted on the station over the years and it has now been confirmed that a new 'Underdogs' series is coming our way.

TG4's 'Underdogs' has been a great show for GAA and hurling players in recent years, with the programme giving athletes who have been hampered by life changing events, a second chance at performing at a high level.

Now, TG4 along with Adare Productions have announced that they are currently taking applications for the new series, with the focus this time being on women's soccer.

With the Women's Premier Division continuing to grow every year and a number of the league's top players receiving call ups to the national side, as well as gaining attention from big clubs abroad, it's safe to say that our national league is certainly on an upward trajectory.

While our Women's National Team head to Australia this summer, in what will be Ireland's first World Cup appearance in over two decades, the Women's League of Ireland will still be in full flow.

For those upcoming players around the country who haven't yet represented a club in the League of Ireland, it could still be a big summer for them.

Applications are now open to Irish women who are keen on taking part in the series and might fancy their chances at competing against some of the best the country has to offer.

Speaking after the launch of their new series, Head of Sport with TG4, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha said that it's set to be an "exciting" summer ahead.

The Underdogs Series has been a long standing and regular staple in TG4’s schedule over many years and we eagerly await the new season of this famous series. In what is a hugely exciting year for Women’s football, we look forward to working with the FAI and Adare Productions in unearthing the next Underdogs squad.”

FAI's League of Ireland director, Mark Scanlon echoed Rónán O Coisdealbha's views and said that the new series will be a great chance for people who haven't yet received an opportunity to impress on the country's biggest stage.

We are delighted to support this initiative which will provide an opportunity and a pathway for players to the game, who may have stepped away from football for a number of reasons, whether due to work, study, family or other commitments. We hope that Underdogs will be an important first step for players who still harbour the ambition to play at the highest level of football in Ireland at an exciting time in the development and growth of women’s football in Ireland.

Anyone who is thinking about applying for the upcoming season of Underdogs can do so here and nationwide trials are set to start in June.
