Late last night the growing momentum behind Martin O'Neill's impending appointment as Republic Of Ireland manager reached a crescendo with many reputable sources reporting the former Sunderland manager had all but agreed a deal with the FAI and might be bringing Roy Keane along as his assistant.
The Telegraph's Luke Edwards had his spin on the story reporting O'Neill was after "a series of productive meetings with the FAI" before somewhat dampening the notion that Keane was to be named as assistant manager saying it was merely at the "germination" stage.
What was troubling about a routine piece about a not so routine story was the ending. In a paragraph of stunning ignorance Edwards describes just why the wider Irish footballing public would welcome a former captain of Northern Ireland:
Perhaps this is what has been holding back Phillippe Troussier all these years.
