Former England international Paul Gascoigne is set to return to football after signing for a Bournemouth based Sunday League side Abbey.
The manager of the Sunday League division Four side acquired the services of the ex-Premier League star after he picked him up for a fare in his taxi. Sandy Hills drove Gascoigne to buy cigarettes before approaching him to play for his club.
I gave him the cigarettes and pulled out the signing-on form at the same time. He signed it there and then.
I was chuffed to bits and ran to the car as fast as I could. I was skipping like a 14-year-old.
Gascoigne is now officially an Abbey player and may make his debut against either Rentech Repairs or ARC Cleaning. The Bournemouth side must see the signing the former British transfer record breaker on a free as a major coup.
