We're entering the "this must not slip now" part of the Steven Gerrard-to-Rangers saga, although this looks unlikely to go awry now. Numerous reports this morning say that Gerrard is ready to take the job at Ibrox following fresh discussions with the club last night. The Daily Record report that Gerrard is ready to take the job following assurances that he will be given sufficient funds to strengthen the squad in order to better compete with Brendan Rodgers' all-conquering Celtic.
And as has been reported up to now, Gary McAllister is likely to be assistant for his debut job in management. Tom Culshaw, Gerrard's assistant with Liverpool's Under-18s, is also expected to join Gerrard in Glasgow.
Speculation is now flying on the players likely to join Gerrard at Rangers, with The Daily Record reporting that Martin Skrtel is chief among Gerrard's transfer targets.
Skrtel played with Gerrard at Anfield, and has a year left to run on his current deal with Fenerbache.
