*Some Irish fans
This time last year it was Roy Keane who was flogging a book and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Whether it was a marketing stunt or not, Keane's book was leaked and we all loved it. This year, it's Steven Gerrard's turn to tell his story and he's going with the more tried and tested route of serialisation, with the Daily Mail his newspaper of choice.
In line with that the former Liverpool captain has sat down for a comprehensive interview with the Mail and one of the great go-to questions cropped up. Who's the best midfielder in Premier League history? And just to help him out his options were narrowed down to Keane, Scholes, Lampard, Vieira or Gerrard.
Now usually when this question is asked, footballers immediately turn to politicians and wrangle their way out of it with some half answers and non-committal platitudes. While Gerrard did eventually resort to that, he was very up front with who he thinks tops the list.
Keane No 1. The rest? They’re all different. Frank’s the best goalscoring midfielder, Scholes the best footballer, Vieira the most difficult opponent... I loved playing against all of them.
If only for an excuse to show it once more, we can only assume this moment had a positive effect on Gerrard's blatant man crush on the Ireland assistant manager.
