Some people feel that the only way they can remain relevant is by having a pop at other, more successful people. (Why A League Of Their Own Is A Load Of Insufferable Nonsense - Ed).
Every few months, El-Hadji Diouf regurgitates his pitiful attacks on Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in a bid to retain some level of relevance. Diouf was interviewed following Liverpool's signing of his compatriot Sadio Mane, and could not resist a dig at Gerrard and Carragher:
Mane has to be worried about nothing. Today you don’t have a bad mentality at Liverpool like Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher. You don’t have a bad mentality any more, people to like only themselves.
Without willing to put too fine a point on it: that's a load of shite by Diouf.
Proof of exactly why came yesterday, as it was revealed that Steven Gerrard made a remarkable £25,000 donation to Charlie's Chance, a public fund aimed at raising money for young Charlie Fearns, a boy from Liverpool who has relapsed for a third time with leukaemia. Charlie's last chance is to raise the £140,000 needed to get Charlie to a clinic in Seattle to have a CAR-T transplant. Those behind the fund revealed Gerrard's donation:
In the interests of clarity, we are in no way suggesting that Gerrard gave the money as a result of Diouf's comments. He is a decent and compassionate man.
Diouf should try it some time.
