The FAI confirmed on Wednesday that Stephen Kenny would not be given a new contract as Ireland manager.

Kenny seemed resigned to the fact that yesterday's draw with New Zealand will be his last game as boss of the Ireland football team, saying after the game that 'it could very well be my last match'.

Various names have been touted as a potential successor, including former Ireland internationals Roy Keane and Lee Carsley.

Steve Bruce Throws Name Into Hat For Ireland Football Manager Job

Steve Bruce - who hasn't managed since a brief stint at West Brom last year - is another name that has been bandied about, and when asked about the job by GamblingZone, his answer was very much a 'come and get me' plea.

I've stated before that I'd like to get back into management, but I find speculation when there's a manager in place to be very disrespectful.

International management would appeal to me at my age, but I find speculation disrespectful while a manager is in place. Once the manager position is free, then they (FAI) can give me a call.

Steve Bruce's son, Alex Bruce, who played international football for both the Republic and Northern Ireland, spoke positively about his father's ambitions for an international manager job.

“At the stage of life that dad is at, an international job would suit him", Alex said in a recent interview with the Sunday Times.

“There’s no way he wants to retire and go walking his dog. When you are sat in the house every day it’s hard when you are used to working.

"I think he feels that there are only so many holidays you can have and only so many days you can spend with the wife. He desperately wants to get back to work.”

Given Bruce's less than glorious stints at Newcastle and West Brom, it's hard to see Ireland supporters getting excited about Bruce's appointment, but stranger things have happened.
