It's that time of the year again. Prepare to start your eye rolling because, beginning today, you can expect to be bombarded with endless debates across Irish media about the whys and wherefores of the Good Friday drink ban. Like a particularly uppity junior GAA coach, the Irish government stick to the ancient law that was written in the stones on Newgrange and that's that.
There's certainly an argument to be made that one day away from the pubs is no bad thing but we're arch libertarians so we've come together with the Irish Greyhound Board to find have a very good alternative.
Ireland ramp up their preparations for Euro 2016 by welcoming Switzerland to the Aviva on Friday. However, that just happens to be Good Friday and every pub in the country is going to be closed. There'll be nowhere to actually watch the match outside of your own sitting room and the Aviva.
Well, Balls.ie and the Irish Greyhound Board have a solution. We're staging a special event for Ireland fans this Good Friday at Shelbourne Park, a stone's throw from the Aviva. You see, Shelbourne Park operates with an alcohol license on Good Friday, so it's the perfect place to watch the match while enjoying some of Ireland's best greyhound racing. Why watch Ireland hammer the Swiss at home alone when you can watch the match with us at Shelbourne Park, while having a few beers in the process?
Just to make the evening extra special, we've invited down Tony Cascarino, who'll be there to discuss his amazing Ireland career and provide analysis in the build-up to the match, as well as half-time and full-time insight. There'll be a few other surprises as well. And the good news is that you can still buy tickets here.
To celebrate the event and the Ireland match, we've got a pretty great prize that will make the night especially memorable. With thanks to the IGB, you can win the following:
- four tickets to the Ireland-Switzerland game PLUS
- a hospitality pack for four to attend the Balls.ie event with Tony Cascarino that includes dinner
