Spanish club Fuenlabrada have been denied a shot at promotion to La Liga after a coronavirus outbreak at the club has resulted in their final league game of the season against Deportivo La Coruna being cancelled.
The fixture in the Spanish second tier was originally set to take place last weekend, but had to be postponed after the club returned 16 positive coronavirus tests. That number jumped to 28 cases after another round of testing on Saturday.
With no space on the calendar to push the fixture out even further, it has now been cancelled.
That is an incredibly tough break for Fuenlabrada, who needed only a draw against already relegated Deportivo to secure a place in the play-offs. This was only their first season in the second tier after achieving promotion last year.
Elche have now been handed that final play-off spot.
La Liga released a statement on their website which confirmed that the game had to be cancelled due to the lack of available dates to play it in the future.
They also thanked Fuenlabrada for accepting the decision, acknowledging that was a difficult thing to do after a hard fought campaign.

Real Zaragoza, Almeria, Girona and Elche will participate in the play-offs, hoping to join Huesca and Cadiz in La Liga next season.
