Snow falls like a gift from the gods for the bored, drunk, cold sports fan. It was not the health and well-being of tens of thousands of supporters that got Premier League matches canceled this weekend. It was the health and wellbeing of cosseted millionaires, who would be a moving target for well-packed snowballs thrown from the supporting stands.

Around Europe, other footballers weren't as lucky. Over in peaceful Bruges, Anderlecht's Jonathan Lagaer was on the receiving end of a direct snowball attack.

Lagaer gives as good as he gets though, and hurled a snowball back. Later a Geordie was found in the stands.

Meanwhile, in Greece, a snowball was used a novel excuse for diving.
