Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher was on Sky Sports News earlier today to speak about last night's Champions League games.
While talking about the first goal in the Celtic - Juventus game with presenters, Hayley McQueen and Rob Wooton, Gallagher said:
I think but for a Juventus player following up a shot very, very quickly we could have had another Holocaust last night.
Gallagher was referring the fifth official next to the goal not having seen the initial touch from Matri crossing the line.
Presenters Wooton and McQueen apologised on air moments later for Gallagher's comments and Sky Sports also issued a statement:
Dermot Gallagher made a comment on air that he clearly now regrets. We have apologised on behalf of him and Sky Sports for any offence caused.
Tweets about Gallagher's comments flowed in moments after their airing
So Dermott Gallagher a disallowed goal could have caused a Holocaust.#oops

Dermot Gallagher comparing a goal line decision to the holocaust. Don't really see the connection myself. Very odd thing to say.

Dermot Gallagher: Don't say Holocaust to describe a sporting fixture/ incident, you silly goose.

Dermot Gallagher talking about Celtic Juve last night. I quote "there could have been a holocaust last night if that goal wasn't allowed"
