Merson And Liverpool Legends Disagree On Premier League Title Race

Liverpool took a massive stride towards a 20th league title with a 2-0 win away to Arsenal on Wednesday.

The win against the in-form Gunners put Liverpool within a point of leaders Manchester City, with the clash between the two at the Etihad coming up next month.

Given City were 14 points ahead mere weeks ago, it marks a massive shift in momentum, with Liverpool's fate now in their own hands.

Sky pundits Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness - both former Liverpool players - were convinced at full-time that their former club are now the favourites for the Premier League title. Paul Merson alongside them was not so sure.

Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool: Sky panel disagree on Liverpool's title credentials

Despite weathering something of an Arsenal storm at points on Wednesday, Liverpool took a massive 2-0 win away from the Emirates.

It was all the more crucial, given Manchester City failed to break Crystal Palace down on Monday. The draw at Selhurst Park, combined with the result in North London on Wednesday, means just one point separates the teams at the top.

Despite the dramatic turn of events at the top of the table, former Arsenal man Paul Merson said he would rather be in Manchester City's position during his post-match punditry on Sky Sports:

Write Man City off at your peril. Nothing's really changed. Liverpool still have to win every game.

They're still one point ahead and playing Liverpool at home. Liverpool still have to win every game. If Man City win every game and draw with Liverpool, they win the league.

You're talking about a Man City team that have won 14 or so games on the trot so many times over the last three or four years. Everybody's celebrating here tonight.

You've got to remember, Man City went to Selhurst Park and drew 0-0. They had enough chances to win two football matches, they're not looking like they won't score a goal.

There's a big celebration [from Liverpool] because it's a big game - coming to Arsenal, who couldn't be playing any better at any time in the season, so it's a big football match.

But you've got to remember - you're chasing down one of the best teams in the world of football. You're one point behind. I know they can go top if they beat Watford...but this City team could reel off eight wins on the trot like that. And they could do it like that. I'd rather be Man City at the moment.

Merson was in something of a precarious position in the Sky studio, lodged between two Liverpool legends in Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher.

Souness attempted to interject during the rant to point out that the state of play had changed dramatically at the top since Monday morning, but Merson stood firm.

Carragher then responded to Merson by suggesting that the signing of Luis Diaz could prove crucial for Liverpool's title aspirations.

Man City aren't in bad form, as Paul said, or losing lots of games or dropping lots of points - but because these teams are so good now, just drawing a game like they drew...City didn't play poorly, but that's how good these teams are. A draw now feels like the end of the world.

The reason I say it's the first time I feel that Liverpool could win, I just feel the signing of Diaz - and not just as individual, but what it's brought to the squad. What Liverpool brought off the bench was much better than what they had when they won the Champions League, when they won the league.

When someone's having a poor game, you know someone can come on and improve the team. That's a massive difference with this team.

Having attempted to give his two cents on multiple occasions, Souness finally got the chance to give his say.

The former Liverpool captain said that City had "opened the door" for Liverpool, and that the fact Liverpool had not given up the opportunity to catch up meant they now had the momentum in the title race.

I think, for City, they'll be doubting themselves. They are a team full of big players...but I think for City, they've played two games - one at Crystal Palace, where they totally dominated the ball, and one against Spurs, where they dominated the ball - that might just be sneaking into their thoughts.

Now, Liverpool will think they can beat anyone without being at their best. Liverpool are quite different. I think for City it's all about scoring the perfect goal. For Liverpool...they can get the job done in a different way.

It's set up to be another thrilling title race between Manchester City and Liverpool, and it would take a brave man to predict where the trophy will end up.

It's hard to argue, however, that there hasn't at the very least been a momentum shift in Liverpool's favour in recent weeks.
