When you see Tayto getting on board the pop up shop thing you have to think that the idea has well and truly hit the mainstream. Temporary shops/bars/restaurants that appear, burn brightly and disappear are ten a penny these days so you need something to stand out from the crowd, particularly if you're planning on doing it in London.
Corkman Sebastian O’Driscoll had a fairly common dream, he wanted to open a bar. However, rather than the rest of us who give it no further thought when we realise how much it would cost, O'Driscoll powered on with a bit of creativity.
Speaking to the Irish Examiner today, O'Driscoll explained how he opened his sports themed bar in a shipping container project in the centre of London. 'Artworks' has rented out over 50 shipping containers to various small businesses and 'Six Yard Box' is one of them.
While that name is enough to draw our attention, we haven't even reached the best part yet. One of the ways that word spread about the small bar was the use of an ingenious new currency. Panini stickers.
We had collected World Cup stickers over the summer and thought ‘why not cover the ceiling with them?’ In reality the stickers we had barely covered half of it.
For the first few weeks people would bring in their football cards and stickers and we’d give them a few pints for them. It became a sort of currency and was great for getting stuff for the ceiling. Soon word spread around about the bar.
The Panini commodities market is not particularly strong so we'd imagine O'Driscoll would prefer your pounds but nonetheless, it's a great way to your name out there.
