All is well in the world for Damien Duff's Shelbourne who remain at the summit of the League of Ireland Premier Division after 20 matches played.

The North Dublin club has far exceeded expectations this campaign, leading second-placed Derry City by two points with a game-in-hand beyond the halfway point of the campaign.

Fortunes have not been as kind to St Patrick's Athletic, who have endured reverse fortunes after winning the FAI Cup last season.

Jon Daly has parted way with former Ireland boss Stephen Kenny taking over in Inchicore but there is clearly work to do.

St Pat's, who would have had designs on mounting a title charge this season, should be looking down not up in the words of another ex-Ireland boss - and superfan - Brian Kerr.

They are eighth in the league, just a place clear of Dundalk who occupy the relegation play-off place in ninth.

While it is unsafe territory they are still seven points clear of the Louth club, who need to win two games in hand to cut the gap to a point.

We wouldn't say St Pat's are in a relegation scrap yet; but that has not stopped their rivals from having a cheeky pop.

Shelbourne fire good natured relegation dig at St Pat's

Shels are not concerned with relegation but certainly had it on the mind in relation to St Pat's when issuing their latest news update on their club website.

Often dubbed the 'Greatest League in the World' for its charm, Shels appear to have taken a light-hearted pop at their struggling Dublin rivals.

Shelbourne posted a preview article ahead of their meeting with Sligo Rovers on Friday and while it was largely commonplace, one sentence stands out.

"Dundalk secured a big win on Monday night, defeating their relegation rivals St Pats 3-2 at Richmond Park."

We wonder how many Pat's fans will share the view that Dundalk are their 'relegation rivals' given the seven-point gap. Cheeky.

It was just weeks ago when the sides met and Shels nicked the win in the dying embers at Richmond Park.

This light-hearted dig won't hurt quite the same but it is sure to raise a few eyebrows.
