Shay Given has admitted that he wants to leave Aston Villa after meeting with manager Paul Lambert to discuss his future.

“I had a meeting with the manager and we both agreed I should be playing first-team football. And that’s not happening at Villa right now.

"I’m not sure what the exact outcome will be, but I’ll be looking to join another club next season, whether that’s on loan or as a transfer."

Given lost his place in the first team to Brad Guzan after two games last season and despite Villa having the third worst defensive record in the Premier League, Guzan was impressive in his first full season in the top flight of English football.

Given has three years left on his contract worth a reported £60,000-a-week so Ireland's most capped player may have to take a wage cut in order to leave the club.
