Bulgaria had taken the lead in the 56th minute through Bozhidar Kraev.
Kraev found a bus corridor of space between Ireland centre-backs Duffy and John Egan which allowed Todor Nedelev to slip him through on goal.
Midtjylland player Kraev then slotted the ball through the legs of Darren Randolph.
Ireland had dominated the opening 45 minutes in terms of possession and had the first half's best chance through Aaron Connolly.
