Spare some sympathy for Roddy Doyle today. Reviews for his latest novel are middling, at best, the wretched Commitments are mooting a reunion and now the Bard of Barrystown has come out of the closet as a Chelsea supporter.
But like every other proud Chelsea supporters, Doyle's been Blue before Russian billionaires started attending matches at Stamford Bridge. Even his favourite Chelsea player is obscure:
Arjen Robben Charlie Cooke.
At least he gets a dig in at Manchester United supporters:
Having spent most of my life listening into results on a Saturday to see how Chelsea did against Scunthorpe, things like that, when the good times arrive, you don’t take them for granted. That’s the one objectionable thing about Manchester United supporters – they really take success for granted.
