Ireland and Everton legend Seamus Coleman scored an absolute screamer from the most unlikely of positions for Everton against Leeds two weeks ago that bagged him match of the day's goal of the month.

Coleman has been the greatest of servants to Everton over his 14 years there and his goal against Leeds proved to be the difference in a huge fixture for them. All that experience shone through in that game, when Coleman was in the perfect place to slide a cross into the box, instead Coleman hit a belter towards the net and behind the keeper. Coleman has been a backbone for Everton, often so against the odds and nearly always without any recognition but his goal against Leed's was simply too good to ignore. The Donegal man took home a solid 29% of Sunday's vote to make him the first Irish international in 12 years to win the prestigious award.

So good and unlikely was the goal that both the BBC's and Sky Sports pundits were convinced he'd only meant to cross the ball. But the Irish international cleared all that speculation up straight after the game confirming he saw his chance, knew what the keeper was expecting and struck it fantastically. While we'll always take a man like Seamus at his word, it wasn't enough to convince some pundits who reckoned he was lying. Thankfully, the people have spoken and decided that Coleman's strike was a worthy choice for goal of the month despite some heavy opposition.

Seamus Coleman now joins a small group of elite Irish players who have won the award. Simon Cox is the last Irish international to win the award (he won it in 2011) and is joined by the likes of Damien Duff and Daryl Murphy in a group of just seven Irish players to win the BBC's award.

Here's that Simon Cox belter from 12 years ago.
