It's no secret that Celtic hero Scott Brown was not exactly the biggest fan of Rangers during his playing career.

Given the history of rivalry between the clubs, it is of course no surprise, but Brown did gain a particularly notorious reputation for his hostility during Old Firm games in the late 2000s and 2010s.

Ultimately, Brown spent 14 years with Celtic, before one final season with Aberdeen brought the curtain down on his playing career in 2022.

With the Dons set to face Brown's old foe of Rangers in Sunday's Scottish League Cup final, the former Scotland international was asked for his thoughts on the upcoming fixture - and couldn't resist a dig at Rangers' VAR luck when presented with a remarkable stat about the Gers.

Scott Brown makes brilliant joke about surreal Rangers penalty stat

It has been nearly two full years since Rangers gave away a penalty in the Scottish Premier League - in fact, Brown was playing in the last fixture which saw a penalty go against the Glasgow side, when Aberdeen earned a 1-1 draw against the then-defending champions in 2022.

There have been some suggestions within the Scottish media that the fortune of Rangers in not conceding a penalty in that stretch of time is actually down to an inherent refereeing bias.

Rangers and Aberdeen will lock horns again on Sunday in the League Cup final - and Scott Brown pointed a jab at Rangers' remarkable luck in their own penalty box when speaking ahead of the final:

Is that the last time they conceded a penalty? I've been retired that long since they last had a penalty against them in the league! That's incredible eh? It's good to see VAR is working well!

I don't think Aberdeen will get a penalty on those stats! Wow.

In fact, the most recent league meeting between the two sides saw a contentious penalty awarded in Rangers' favour.

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson was furious when, after a lengthy VAR review, a 94th minute spot-kick was awarded to Rangers to snatch a draw in the dying moments.

Ahead of Sunday's final, Scott Brown went on to say that Rangers "have" to win, but said that the Celtic and Aberdeen voices inside him were hoping for the alternative - pointing out with hope that Aberdeen have already beaten Rangers at Ibrox in the league this season.

Hopefully they can go to Hampden and lift that trophy as well. Aberdeen winning would have a huge kick on Rangers, especially after Celtic losing at the weekend.

I'm sure every Celtic fan will be watching the game and hoping just as much as I am that Aberdeen win this game.

On the other side of the coin, former Rangers star Kris Boyd has recently hit out at Aberdeen for what he perceives to be differing motivation levels from the Dons when they play Celtic compared to clashes with Rangers.

There's a lot riding on Sunday's League Cup final, and it's set to be a hugely charged afternoon. Kick-off between Rangers and Aberdeen from Hampden Park on Sunday is at 3pm.
