Paul Scholes Says He May Have Been At Fault For One Of Man United's Big Regrets

Unless you have absolutely no interest in European football, you'll probably have heard that Paul Pogba is quite a decent footballer. The Juventus midfielder has improved year on year since moving to Turin in 2012 and he looks set to take his place at football's highest table sooner rather than later.

PSG look to be in pole position to snap up the 22 year old for a figure in excess of £50 million but they won't be the only ones chasing his signature and Man United fans just can't help but think 'what if'.

What if Fergie had thrown him into the first team when he wanted him to? What if he had matured in Manchester rather than Turin? And now perhaps, what if Paul Scholes hadn't come out of retirement in 2012?

Writing in his ever entertaining column in the Independent, Scholes admitted that his surprise return to the Premier League in 2012 may have damaged Man United in the long run.

I sometimes wonder whether coming back into the team contributed to blocking the development of young players who were hoping to break through, and one in particular.

That player was Paul Pogba. The Frenchman left Old Trafford in July 2012 after allowing his contract to run down and there does appear to be a touch of guilt on Scholes' part that his return at the age of 37 meant Pogba's path to the first team was blocked.

I think my return to the team, and the game time Paul got, was a small part of it.

By the time I came back into the side in January he might well have made up his mind that he was leaving. But I don’t suppose it helped having an old boy come back into the team in front of him.

Scholes does go on to state his belief that it was more a matter of money that led Pogba to seek opportunities elsewhere, a decision which has certainly proved fruitful for him. However, even though he has blossomed, Scholes does not think Man United should be in the running for Pogba's signature particularly 'for the sums being talked about having lost him for the compensation payment.'

An Irish midfielder was also mentioned in Scholes column with Bournemouth's Harry Arter being singled out for praise in relation to a very promising season.

I like the look of Callum Wilson and Matt Ritchie. Harry Arter looks a good player and both full-backs bomb on. I believe in attacking football and that teams who play that way will get their reward eventually.

Let's hope they can continue that style of football in the Premier League next year.
