Maurizio Sarri was unaware of how close Chelsea were to announcing the signing of Christian Pulisic.
The transfer of the American from Borussia Dortmund to Stamford Bridge for €64 million was announced on Wednesday morning. He will be loaned back to Dortmund for the remainder of the season.
The Italian was asked his opinion about Pulisic a month ago and he was positive with his feedback but did not know a deal was so near.
"I don't know," said Sarri following Wednesday's goalless draw with Southampton when asked if the club would be signing any players in January.
I didn't know anything about [Chelsea signing] Christian Pulisic yesterday.
The club asked my opinion about him one month ago and my opinion was positive. Today I knew the deal was done but I didn't know anything. I am not in charge of the market.
I have to think about my matches. We have to play every three days. I can only say my opinion to the club.
I say to them my opinion if they want to improve the team.
