If the process surrounding the recruitment of the next Republic of Ireland manager had already not been depressing enough, the most grim of all possible options mentioned in the media has now thrown his hat into the ring.
That's right, Sam Allardyce is interested in the gig.
His name is often bandied about as a worst case scenario of the backward steps teams can take when appointing their next manager. In saying that, the man himself has often attempted to dismiss the notion that he is some sort of footballing dinosaur.
In any case, he has now admitted that he is interested in taking his managerial talents to Dublin.

Sam Allardyce declares interest in Ireland job
Appearing at a Second Captains live show on Friday evening, Sam Allardyce was asked if he would be interested in the vacant Republic of Ireland job.
He admitted that he would, going on to say what he would do differently in comparison to the 'failed' last couple of seasons under Stephen Kenny.
Yes, I would always have an interest and always like to speak to them, of course.
It would be nice to be interviewed and see where they're going and what they're thinking. Of course, it's just a short journey over by plane.
You’re not to forget, I spent a full season at Limerick. That was an eye-opener to say the least...
Nobody has officially made any offer, in terms of whatever shortlist may have been brought up. Obviously that is all done through my agent, which is the way things go today.
Whoever they choose is a big decision for them, of course. They have failed a bit recently in the last few seasons to say the least. I don't know whether that's the manager, or a combination of the manager and the team...
I've always been pragmatic in terms of how good are the players and we will suit a system or style for those players and play to their strengths, and try and cover their weaknesses when all is said and done.
If you're playing a team that is so much better than you, it will be about limited possession you've got and how good is the defending to try and get the ability to score a goal and win a game of football.
I play winning football, that's what I play.

Of course, you get the sense that there will be very few Ireland fans clamouring for the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager despite his interest in the job. That is despite his strong links to Limerick, where he spent one season as player-manager in the early 1990s.

His most recent managerial gig came during a four-game spell at Leeds United last season, one that ultimately saw them relegated from the Premier League. His assistant at Elland Road was former Ireland coach Robbie Keane. Before that, he also took West Brom down to the Championship in 2021.
You would really hope that the FAI would feel that there might be better options out there.
