Ryan Reynolds has been singing the praises of James McClean, after the Ireland centurion joined the Hollywood revolution at Wrexham.

McClean is arguably the highest-profile player to move to the Welsh club since Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over in 2020, and the Derryman brings a wealth of club and international experience into the Racecourse Ground dressing room.

With Wrexham looking for back-to-back promotions, McClean's big-game experience could prove crucial, as Reynolds explained on Sky Sports on Saturday.

Ryan Reynolds on James McClean

"I spoke with James, as did Rob and we’re super excited," said the Deadpool star.

"Not just because obviously he’s an enormous talent and a huge addition to the team, he’s a leader. He’s one of these guys you speak to and you are immediately filled with confidence, and you understand that he understands what’s ahead of him and the job he needs to do.

"He’s going to be amazing in the locker room I think, he brings a tonne of experience. He’s like a lot of our players in the locker room, one of the things I’m most proud of and I know Rob feels the same way, the heads of the guys in the locker room, they just have this humility to them, they work really hard and they take this deadly serious.

"James is no different and I can’t wait to have him here, he’s going to be amazing."

James McClean "delighted" to join Wrexham

McClean's move to Wales from Wigan Athletic was confirmed on Friday afternoon, when he spoke of his excitement at joining the club for their League Two battle.

"I’m absolutely delighted to sign for Wrexham. It’s a project that is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“The club has ambitions to go even further, and I’m a very ambitious person. I’m someone who is driven and I want to be a part of that journey.”

Potential debut against old club

McClean missed out on Wrexham's opening League Two fixture on Saturday, as they lost 5-3 at home to MK Dons.

He could be in line to make his debut on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup when, incidentally, they will come up against Wigan, a club for whom McClean played some of his best football across two spells.

That match will be live on Sky Sports, with a kick-off time of 8pm.
