Ireland U21 international Ryan Johansson has completed a move to SC Freiburg from Sevilla.

Johansson signed for Sevilla in 2020, and lined out for their reserve team Sevilla Atlético 39 times across four seasons with the club, scoring two goals from midfield.

He spent part of the 2021-22 season on loan at Dutch side Fortuna Sittard, before returning to Spain ahead of the beginning of last season.

Freiburg have now confirmed the signing of the highly-rated Johansson, in a move which will hopefully bolster the youngster's development.

The reserve team - SC Freiburg II - play in 3. Liga, Germany's third division.

An exciting midfield prospect, Johansson was born in Luxembourg to a Swedish father and Irish mother, leaving him with a major decision to make as to which country he would declare for at international level.

The Bayern Munich academy product formally declared for Ireland in 2021, after a prolonged saga which saw him wrangling with FIFA due to passport issues.

He stated at the time of his debut for the Ireland U21 team that his desire was to play at major international tournaments for the country:

Once it came down to it and my parents asked me 'who do you really want to play for', it was a no-brainer in the sense of choosing Ireland. It was my heart anted to go...

I want to play in the European Championships, I want to play in the World Cup. I think anything is possible with Ireland right now with the talent coming through, you see a lot of young players playing in the first team.

Despite the excitement around Johansson when he declared for Ireland and made six appearances for the U21 team in 2021, the now 22-year-old's career has stagnated somewhat since then, and he has made no international appearances since bursting into the team two years ago.

Irish fans will hope that the move to Freiburg might just revitalise Ryan Johansson's career and help him to reach his potential.
