For the first time in Ryan Giggs' adult life, he finds himself out of the job. After nearly three decades of pulling up to Carrington for training, the Welshman will have to find some other things to occupy his time while he's on the hunt for work and it seems that bickering with Jose Mourinho - a favoured pastime of both Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola - will have to do for now.
As he is prone to do, Mourinho wasted little time in ruffling a few feathers during his official introduction at Manchester United. Asked about Giggs leaving the club, the Portuguese said that he had been offered a senior coaching role at the club but that this wasn't enough to tempt him to stay as he had his eye on the position that Mourinho now calls his own, saying:
The job that Ryan wanted to have was the one they have given to me. It’s not my fault. He wanted to be manager of Manchester United.
Mourinho said that Giggs was nonetheless offered a "top job" by the club but anything less than assistant manager, which he held under Louis van Gaal, was deemed by him to be demotion. But it now seems that, not only has Mourinho twisted the narrative a little bit, he hadn't even spoken to Giggs about him joining up with the new coaching ticket at Old Trafford.
As per The Times, Giggs was said to be "shocked" at Mourinho's comments during the press conference and that he was more than willing to take reduced coaching role but the only discussion he had with the club was about helping out in a youth development capacity - not necessarily a great move for someone who has designs on sitting in the manager's dugout at Old Trafford.
When he appeared on ITV's Euro 2016 coverage last week, Giggs was still technically a Man United employee. As such, there was no word from him on the situation at Old Trafford. However, he's back in the ITV studio alongside Roy Keane tonight and it will be very interesting to see whether the latest developments will be enough to allow him to open up a little bit more.
