While Southampton have taken ten points from their first four games in their Championship campaign, there have been some concerning aspects about their performances.

They have conceded quite a few goals, shipping 11 in five games when you also take into consideration their 3-1 Carabao Cup loss to Gillingham.

As a result, some of their supporters have started to question the position of Gavin Bazunu. One fan even went as far as to put the issue to manager Russell Martin during a recent event, asking if the club would bring in a new goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window. Martin's answer was emphatic, showing his faith in the Ireland international.

Southampton boss backs Gavin Bazunu again

Gavin Bazunu performed well during Southampton's 2-1 win over QPR at the weekend, making some big saves during the game.

Speaking to the Daily Echo in the aftermath of that game, Russell Martin once again backed his goalkeeper, saying his teammates needed to do more to prevent the opposition from creating scoring opportunities.

I’m annoyed for him that we’ve conceded so many goals and we will have to sort that out.

He made a couple of big saves for us against QPR and he shouldn’t have to so we will stop that but he has been great.

He has great courage, the saves he has made and how commanding he has been has been great. By the end of the season, he is another one who will be a real favourite.

A few clean sheets would quickly clear up any fans concerns about the goalkeeper, with Southampton already racking up the points in the Championship despite their concerns at the back.

Gavin Bazunu will also be hoping to put in a couple of big performances on the international stage, with Ireland facing into Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands next month.
