Yes indeed, 'tis the silliest season. January is fast approaching and clubs are scrambling around like a desperate shopper on Christmas Eve grabbing anything on the bargain aisle to plug holes in their team. Now usually we let these rumours sail over our heads and pay no heed to them but we can't let the suggestion pass that Liverpool want to solve their striker problem with a former striker who doesn't score goals.
That's right, according to Rob Shepherd's Football Grapevine in the Mail (Stop giggling) Liverpool are giving serious thought to bringing Fernando Torres back to Anfield from Chelsea by way of AC Milan. The story starts with the argument that Milan want out of their two year Torres loan deal because of his wretched form (1 goal in 10 games) and then explains why Liverpool would want him:
Liverpool, who seem to be giving up on the gamble that saw them sign Mario Balotelli for £16million from Milan last summer, need to bolster their strike force.
And Torres, who was outstanding for the Reds (65 goals in 102 Premier League games) before being sold to Chelsea for £50million in 2010 could fit the bill.
We're going to make a wild prediction here; Liverpool's vaunted 'Transfer committee' will veto this move.
