Late in Portugal's 0-0 draw with Austria, the schadenfreude surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo was immense.
After being fouled the box, the Portuguese stepped up to take the penalty. His strike would hit the sport. He would also have a goal ruled out for offside moments later.
On commentary for RTÉ was Stephen Alkin with Ray Houghton on co-comm duty.
After Ronaldo's spotkick hit the post, Alkin uttered some strange remarks.
He hits the post - unbelievable!
The arrogance of the man! The whole goal at his mercy, the goalie went the wrong way and he stroked it against the post.
Yes, the arrogance of the man from attempting to stick the ball in the bottom corner.
It left those watching on RTÉ bemused.
"The arrogance of the man" say Stephen Alkin as one of the best players in history misses a penalty. What?! Sinister. #RTEsoccer

RTÉ viewers were not the only ones perplexed by Alkin's commentary. In the RTÉ studio, Richie Sadlier proclaimed 'I don't really know what the hell that was about'.
