Welsh rock band Feeder enjoyed a period of popularity at the turn of the millennium, charting in the UK and Ireland with a number of successful singles, with 'Buck Rodgers' being comfortably their most successful tune.
But over in Japan, an album track from 2001 release 'Echo Park' gained a cult following as it was featured on the official soundtrack for Gran Turismo, a Playstation 2 game made by Sony. The game sold in the millions as it launched with the console which needless to say was quite popular, and gamers fell in love with a track called 'Just A Day'.
It did well as a single in these parts too, but someone at RTÉ became aware of the song during the 2002 World Cup, and decided to use it as the backing track for a look back on a fantastic tournament. I don't know who that person is, but I wish I could shake their hand, as what was produced is as good a sporting montage as I have seen to this day.
In pausing to allow the great Jim Beglin to comment '...looks like the big toe area', they highlighted one of my favourite ever commentary moments.
It had everything. The colour of the fans, the overwhelming positivity surrounding it, big goals, dramatic moments, and Ireland. Lots of Ireland.
They have a knack for pulling out a damn good montage over at RTÉ, but this was perfect.
Oh, and by the way, Feeder played in Dublin just last week. They're back together and touring, fair play to them.
