Tributes have been pouring in for Roy Keane's beard, which, according to reports, was laid to rest this evening.
It fell to the Times football writer George Caulkin to break the sad news to an unprepared world this evening.

Many believe that the blame/credit lies with Newstalk reporter Sinead O'Donnell who, at yesterday's press conference in the Aviva Stadium, asked Roy whether he would 'get rid' of the beard. Roy replied, in an almost flirtatious manner, that he would do so if she wanted him too.
Listen to that pivotal exchange here.
The mood is sombre online this evening. Twitter rallies around when things like this occur. Here is a flavour of the reaction.

Sad to hear about the demise of Roy Keane's beard. It was such a loyal sidekick during all the recent strife. Like Triggs post-Saipan — Evan Fanning (@evanfanning) October 10, 2014
I am hearing unconfirmed reports that Roy Keane's beard has gone missing. I must stress that the news is as yet unconfirmed. #keanosbeard
