Roy Keane has never been the biggest fan of Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive abilities, and has often questioned the Liverpool star's consistency.

In the past Jurgen Klopp has experimented with playing him in midfield, a tactic that Gareth Southgate then adopted for England, but quickly abandoned during the Euros last summer.

Earlier this Month Trent played for England in their 3-1 victory over Finland, and the Irishman was still critical of his performance.

"If you give time to Trent, you can see his decision-making, his quality passing is fantastic but honestly, I still can't believe how bad he is defensively.

"Against better teams, of course he'll be found out."

Now on the latest episode of Stick to Football, the panel were discussing how well Arne Slot's team have done so far this season, and how solid they have been defensively.

Liverpool have only conceded six goals in 12 games this season, an impressive feat, and it was pointed out that Trent has also improved in this area.

However, Keane was quick to point out that the Englishman was subbed off while Liverpool were 2-1 up against Chelsea last weekend, and replaced by Joe Gomez, a more traditional defender to see out the game.

"Trent – everyone thought he was brilliant defensively but the manager took him off with ten minutes to go.

"Brilliant, isn't it? But anyway, that's not the point. Ten minutes to go, you're 2-1 and you take him off – that's a great message.

"We really trust you defensively."

Gary Neville actually thought that it was the left back position that looked weaker for the Reds, highlighting Andy Robertson as a potential weak point as Liverpool prepare to face Arsenal this Sunday.

"Andy Robertson is a brilliant defender but I thought there was something up with him last week.

"I thought he had a really tough game. If Saka is playing it could make a difference."

Keane added: "Madueke kept running by him — that's not good!"

Regardless of defensive criticisms, Liverpool are currently top of the league and hold the best defensive record so far this season.

There is no question that the Anfield faithful have had a relatively easy start, but Arsenal this weekend will be their toughest challenge yet, and could show whether or not Slot has what it takes to lead this team on a title charge.
