Looking at the issues at Manchester United this season, many see Marcus Rashford of a prime example of why they have failed to meet expectations in recent months.

The 26-year old came into the campaign on the back of a strong showing in 22/23, with many expecting him to kick on under Erik ten Hag. However, this has certainly not been the case.

Rashford has been in terrible form, scoring eights goals in all competitions. Not only that, but there have questions about his attitude both on and off the pitch.

The forward has lacked effort at times, often strolling around the field and not looking as though he was giving 100 per cent. Add to that the issues that came after he failed to report for training after a night out in Belfast, and it's easy to see why many are questioning his application.

Marcus Rashford is no longer a young player. He should now be in the prime of his career and have the ability to elevate this Manchester United team to the next level.

Despite this, many continue to make excuses for him.

Gary Neville and Rio Ferdianand were at it once again on the latest edition of  Stick To Football. They blamed Rashford's lack of form a number of factors, including the poor structures at Old Trafford and the lack of leaders in the current Manchester United squad.

However, Roy Keane was not buying it.

He was quick to call out his former teammates and questioned why everyone continued to make excuses for the Englishman at this point in his career.

Do we make excuses for him? About the structure about him, the team around him, the manager.

There is no questions marks about his ability, you have all made the point that he is outstanding.

But you look at him and there is something amiss about him. We've had these conversations every few months. A player can have an off spell or a dip, but it's almost as if he's not enjoying his football...

I wouldn't say I'm worried about him, but there's something amiss and something wrong with this kid. It could be the people around him, whether it be family or the manager.

You're on about [Alex] Ferguson screaming at the lads, who is on his case every day? There's nothing wrong with the old fashioned kick up the arse and go 'come on, we need more from you'.

When you're not at it and the team is not at it, if you want to be this leader and you're on the big contract, there is that responsibility.

I don't think that is happening, I don't think there is anybody on his case. That doesn't mean he can't still produce and start running a bit more...

There is loads of experience around him. The centre halves, Varane is experienced, Maguire is experienced. There is experienced players around him, international players around him, players who are older.

He has experience around him, that's not the issue.

Roy Keane certainly has a point.

Marcus Rashford is at a point in his career where he should be performing on a consistent basis, even if the team around him is playing poorly.

He is one of the best paid players in the Premier League and has long been touted as a world class prospect. Excuses are now running out for the Manchester United man, who looks increasingly likely to fall short of the potential he showed earlier in his career.
