Plenty of things made Roy Keane's blood boil but of all the things Keane could fault his former Manchester United teammate Ruud Van Nistelrooy for we weren't expecting this, yet for some reason, it doesn't surprise us at all.
While Ruud and Keane might be vastly different footballers one renowned for his passing ability and the other his shooting, as sportspeople go they're somewhat similar. At Man United both players were completely standard-driven, demanding the best from their performances, so much so that Ruud was known to lose the head if his name wasn't on the scoreboard, even when Man United won.
Ruud enjoyed a stellar career at Manchester United scoring 150 goals in just 219 appearances for the club. With the sheer number of goals, it's abundantly clear that Ruud was an astute player with an eye for scoring goals.
His hunger for goals did drum up quite a reputation, however, as well as his short temper, people weren't long associating Ruud with an aversion for passing and just about everything except shooting.
He appeared on the Overlap podcast this week with Gary Neville poking fun at his glory-hunting before Ruud revealed what he used to do that made Roy Keane's blood boil.
Roy with my hair band, remember that? He killed me for four months
Remember when I came I had longer hair… and I put it in in training and went to the dressing room with the mirrors and put the hairband in and he was like, ‘F****** hell'.
Ruud even went as far as considering cutting his hair for Keane at one point, while he was gallant in standing his ground against the wrath of Roy Keane there was only ever going to be one winner.
I’d actually had enough of it and I cut my hair… I thought after one month I wasn’t going to cut my hair for this guy. Two months, every day for two months and then after three months… I took my hair band off.
We'd love to see what Keane would do with some of the haircuts doing the rounds at the moment.
