Manchester United and the wider world of football descended into a state of mourning recently when it was announced that Bobby Charlton had passed away, with Roy Keane the latest big name to pay tribute to a true footballing legend.

Charlton had a truly remarkable life and career. Not only was he a survivor of the Munich Air Disaster, but he would go on to lead the next era of Manchester United, establishing himself as the club's greatest ever player by the time he hung up his boots. That is an honour that he probably still holds to this day.

Not only was he a special player on the pitch, but those who interacted with him off it said he was an absolute gentleman.

Roy Keane pays brilliant tribute to Bobby Charlton

Roy Keane is not afraid to give his real opinion on other figures in football, with his words about Bobby Charlton pointing towards just what sort of man he was.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said the Englishman was different from many other figures during his time at Manchester United and was 'one of the coolest people he had ever met'.

It has been a sad week, but it has also been an important week to try and celebrate his life and his career.

He was a great ambassador for the club. I was fortunate enough to meet him a number of times, particularly when I was a player here after big games.

If we were in a final or had won something, a lot of the directors would come into the dressing room after the game. You would see some of the other directors, they were like snakes in the grass trying to get pictures with all the big hitters.

Bobby would come in and have a quiet word with players, shake your hand and say 'well done' or 'unlucky'. He was just a class act. He was a really top guy, probably one of the coolest guys I've ever met.

It was an honour to have met him. Obviously he was an amazing player and a great ambassador for the club...

When you're playing for United you talk about setting standards on and off the pitch. The club is going through a difficult spell at the moment, talking about the ownership and the team struggling, but this is a good reminder of what makes this club such a great club.

It was people and players like Bobby Charlton, that's what makes this a great club. I know it's sad for everybody, but it's also important to celebrate his life. He was 86 years of age, what an amazing life and career he had. That should be celebrated.

In any case, Bobby Charlton clearly made a lasting positive impression on him.
