With the saga of Martin O'Neill and Leicester City at the 'will-he won't he' stage, it's almost bizarre that it's taken this long for a leading candidate to be put forward should O'Neill jump ship from the FAI.
While it's unclear whether O'Neill with rejoin the foxes given that no official approach has been made at this time, the FAI are understood to favour continuity at the helm should O'Neill depart. This means that Roy Keane would be the man to step up and take direct orders from John Delaney. Wouldn't that be a treat?
The Irish Examiner are reporting that should O'Neill leave, it's highly likely that Keane will be given the job on an interim/"let's see what you can do" basis until the end of the qualifiers. The possibility of job-sharing for O'Neill until the end of the qualifiers hasn't been ruled out - but given how well that went for Keane in his duel roles as assistant managers with Ireland and Aston Villa, combined with the FAI's historic reluctance on that issue it would seem to be a non-runner.
Should Keane take up the job - even temporarily- even dead rubber games would take on an added level of intrigue.
