Under the stewardship of Martin O'Neill and assistant coach Roy Keane, Ireland enjoyed a wonderful French summer at EURO 2016.

Drawn into a tricky group for the second EUROs in a row, Ireland managed to earn a draw against Sweden and a memorable victory against Italy to progress to the last 16, where they would ultimately be knocked out by the hosts.

Despite the round-of-16 exit, the tournament will live long in the memory for Irish fans, especially seeing as we may be waiting a long time to see the men's team back in a major tournament.

Chief among the best memories of that EUROs was Robbie Brady's iconic late winner against Italy. However, Wes Hoolahan's goal to put the Boys in Green ahead in the opener against Sweden ranks right up there with the best strikes Ireland have ever scored at a major tournament.

Roy Keane played a crucial role in the success of Ireland at that tournament as part of Martin O'Neill's coaching team.

The Corkman had an embarrassing moment on this week's instalment of The Overlap, however, as he struggled to recall who had scored for Ireland in 2016 during a quiz on the history of the EUROs.

Roy Keane struggled through Ireland section of 'Overlap' quiz

The Overlap's 'Stick to Football' podcast with Sky Bet had been reporting from on the ground in Berlin during EURO 2024. They wrapped up their coverage with a EUROs-themed quiz from the Brandenburg Gate, which was released on Wednesday morning.

At first, Roy Keane and Ian Wright were fuming with what they saw as softer questions for the opposing pair of Gary Neville and Jill Scott.

However, Keane would quickly turn on his teammate in hilarious fashion when the first Irish-themed question came up.

The pair were asked to name at least four of Ireland's five goalscorers in European Championship history, and Keane was not impressed with Wright's attempts.

Roy Keane: Ay ay ay...

Ian Wright: Robbie Keane?

Keane: Just relax a second! The EUROs...obviously number one, I'll say Ray Houghton...Ronnie Whelan...

Wright: John Aldridge.

Keane: Shut up a second! These are EUROs, Aldridge scored in the World Cup!

However, the embarrassment was quickly to turn on the Irishman.

Having named the two 20th-century scorers, Keane then drew a blank on the two players who scored for his Irish team at EURO 2016.

Despite having been assistant coach at the tournament, it took Keane a fair while to name Robbie Brady. Gary Neville would tease him over being unable to pick out who had scored the opener against Sweden.

Keane: Fuckin' hell...so we've only got two? We need two more? The Spain-Croatia group [in 2012]? Jaysis...

Gary Neville: But you scored a goal, when you were coach?

Keane: Yeah, thanks Gary for reminding me...eh...[pause] Robbie Brady.

Neville: This would be an earthquake in Ireland if he didn't get this right.

Keane: Well I'm not getting any help from him [Wright], am I?

Jill Scott: You're telling him to shut up!

Keane: I keep getting mixed up with the World Cup...who scored against Sweden in Paris? Was that a draw? That's a good question...

Wright: Just give us those, who is it?

Keane: No, we might as well have a guess, we have to have a guess...Wes Hoolahan?!

Quizmaster: Yes

Keane: YES! GET IN THERE!

Needless to say, Keano was ecstatic when he finally remembered Wessi's belter against the Swedes.

Keane and Wright failed to get the final name of Ireland's five goalscorers over the line - though, in fairness, we've all tried to forget the aftermath of Sean St. Ledger's goal against Croatia in 2012.

It would have been fairly embarrassing for Roy Keane had he totally blanked on the events of EURO 2016 - he has Gary Neville to thank for planting the memory in his head.
