Roy Keane Slams Media Narrative Around Harry Kane's Spurs Antics

If you ever wanted evidence that Harry Kane is the darling of the British media, you only need look at the way his antics at Spurs have been covered over the last couple of weeks.

We have become accustomed to players being slammed in the press when they angle for moves away from clubs. They are labelled as disrespectful and ungrateful, while a failure to turn up for training is seen as the cardinal sin.

It seems to be very different for Kane. There seems to be a lot more understanding about his absence from Spurs, with many very slow to criticise the England captain despite an obvious breach of trust between player and club.

We have repeatedly been told that 'he's not that type of player', although the evidence would seem to suggest otherwise. There is a sense that Tottenham have somehow wronged Kane by not accepting a certain fee for him, although they are fully entitled to seek a massive deal for a player who has three years remaining on his contract.

Gary Neville was at it again last night in The Overlap's live special, suggesting Harry Kane is the ultimate pro and we don't know what is going on behind the scenes at Spurs.

Roy Keane wasn't having it.

He said that while Kane is entitled to seek a move away, he can't just decide to down tools and not train. He also slammed the striker for attempting to set his own transfer fee when he has been so well compensated by the club in the past.

I think there's nothing wrong with a player wanting to leave a club, we all do that in life and want better things for ourselves and our families.

But for Harry to put a price on himself, you did sign the deal. I'm pretty sure he's not on £5,000 per week at Tottenham, they're looking after him and he's on a good deal.

If Man City are speaking to his agent and they want to do the deal, then let them do the deal if they really want you.

From Spurs' point of view, they've probably said 'look if something comes in for you we will have a look at it'. I have no doubt they probably said that last year and had a bit of a 'gentleman's agreement', whatever the hell that means.

But it depends on the offer, that's up to Spurs.

[Jack] Grealish had a clause in his contract, it was £100million. I done it at Nottingham Forest, I had a clause that if we got relegated I could leave for £3.5million.

It's clean and straightforward. In the Spanish league I think every player has a release clause...

Harry can't have his cake and eat it. Gary [Nevile] keeps saying here 'he's and great lad and we don't know the ins and outs of it'.

I think the great lads still get on with their training...

If you're Spurs and you see Grealish going for £100million, then Spurs are entitled to say 'we want £200million' or whatever...

Nobody would begrudge him going to Man City, but it's a Tottenham's valuation. It has to be, because if every player dictated what he was going to go for then what's the point of having a contract?

Is Harry going to give all the money that he got back to Spurs for the last few years? You can' say to a club 'I want to sign a contract for £200,000 per week, but next year I want to head away and I'll dictate the transfer fee'.

It certainly seems that Kane is attempting to become the dominant force in these negotiations, a position he resigned when he put pen to contract on a six year contract as a 25-year old player back in 2018.

That seemed a foolish move at the time and has looked even worse as the years went on. Ultimately, it could act as the shackles that stop him getting his move this summer.
