In a short statement released on Monday night, Aston Villa announced that Ross McCormack's time at the club has come to an end. It was said that the Scot will leave "after signing a variation agreement".
McCormack was signed by Villa from Fulham in the summer following relegation from the Premier League in 2016. He penned a four-year contract. Monday's announcement means he departs Villa Park with a year left on that deal.
The 32-year-old's time at the club was a disaster. In three seasons, he made just 24 appearances. The last of those was in a League Cup game against Middlesbrough in September 2017.
A falling out with then manager Steve Bruce just five months into his time at Villa was an early signpost that McCormack's time at the club was going off the tracks. Bruce was unhappy with McCormack's fitness and said that he had failed to turn up at training because his home's electronic gates would not open.
He subsequently spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest, Melbourne City, Central Coast Mariners and, this season, Motherwell.
"It's been a bit of a shambles to be honest but that's football," McCormack told the BBC earlier this year.
