It had been expected, towards the end of January, that the next chapter would be opened in Robbie Keane's career.
The 36-year-old said in an appearance on Soccer AM that he would likely be signing for a 'UK club'. However, that move did not happen.
Keane had been linked with a move to Championship side Preston, with manager Simon Grayson being open regarding his interest in the striker.
There is still a real possibility of Ireland's record goal scorer joining another club. Keane said upon leaving LA Galaxy late last year that he wanted 'one last major challenge in club football'.
According to Daniel McDonnell in today's Irish Independent, Keane is spending this week training with Shamrock Rovers. The Tallaght side had been the bookies favourite to sign the player once he left LA Galaxy. However, a deal was never a possibility.
Keane's time with the club, who have former Ireland teammate Damien Duff among their coaching staff, is being used to maintain his fitness in anticipation of his next move.
