Robbie Keane Could Jump Above Another Legend In The Record Books Tonight

He may not be worried about it but every international goal that Robbie Keane scores pushes him to the upper echelons of a very exclusive club.

The vast majority of us will remember a time when it was a big deal that Niall Quinn finally overtook Frank Stapleton's Irish record of twenty Irish goals. We knew that record wouldn't last long given how well Robbie Keane's career had begun but no one could have imagined he'd be heading towards the incredible total of 70 international goals.

He's currently siting on 67, just one shy of the man many would hail as the greatest international goalscorer. Gerd Muller's 68 goals for West Germany came in just 62 international and while Keane can't boast that kind of ratio, it would be a measure of his career if he could join Muller or even climb above him against Georgia tonight.

For his part, Keane is not thinking about that, at least not while he's still playing.

I still don't really think about it too much. It's probably one of those that when I hang the boots up and look back at it, then I can give myself a little bit of a pat on the back.

And while we're talking about still playing, it's worth remembering that Keane is by far the most prolific current international striker. Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz is the closest to him back on 58 goals. However, as good as Keane's record is, he still has a bit to go before reaching Ali Daei's all time record of 109 goals for Iran.
