Rio Ferdinand angered Manchester United fans and even a current player after last night's Champions League final when he insisted that Pep Guardiola did not need to win the Champions League to be considered one of the greatest managers of all time.

Guardiola managed Manchester City to their first Champions League victory last night as the English side defeated Inter Milan 1-0 to win a famous treble.

They are the first side to achieve the feat since Ferdinand's former club United did so in 1999 and only the second English club in history to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

United fans watching the BT Sport coverage were left unimpressed as Ferdinand heaped praise on Guardiola.

"Does he need this game to be recognised as one of the greatest, if not the greatest?" he said.

"We’re all I think in agreeance, he doesn’t even need it because of the way he sees the games.

"He has his teams painting pictures like we’ve never seen in my lifetime. Michaelangelo, however you want to do it.

'This team have played a brand of football that around the world is looked at, is admired. This has been a project and a process for a long time, for many years now, Pep Guardiola coming in. But these players have produced some football that is out of this world. Individually but as a collective this team will go down in history obviously."

Among those to react was United defender Brandon Williams. He was not happy with Ferdinand's assessment, tagging his account on Instagram and writing: "Bet you don't congratulate if you was player keeep [sic] the same morals."

With a yawning emoji, he had another dig at the BT Spot pundit adding "too face [sic] are boring."

Manchester United fans appeared to agree with Williams:

It will be interesting to see how Ferdinand reacts to William's criticism.
