One of the most random news pieces we have seen today is also our favourite as we learned that not only is the Crystal Maze coming back to our TV screens, but also that Rio Ferdinand will be a contestant on the show.
At first we thought we may have just been getting 'merked' but alas, it is an actual thin with the genius that is Stephen Merchant hosting proceedings.
EXCLUSIVE! @StephenMerchant hosts #CrystalMaze @SU2C special, with @rioferdy5 @michkeegan @JonniePeacock @sarajcox & @joshwiddicombe.
SOON! pic.twitter.com/QIYrv6JnMf— Channel 4 (@Channel4) October 4, 2016
There is no timeframe for the broadcast, other than Channel 4 tweeting 'SOON' but this news gives us the perfect excuse to look back on some clips that bring back some absolutely golden 90s TV nostalgia.
When you think of Channel 4 in that decade, you think of Crystal Maze hosted by Richard O'Brien, and Football Italia, hosted by James Richardson. Is it a co-incidence that the hosts of both shows were bald? Probably, but they were both outstanding nonetheless.
Everybody had their own 'section' that they were sure they would do best on, Aztec being the most common shout, but more than anything else everybody desperately wanted a go at grabbing tickets in the crystal ball at the end of the show.
We sincerely hope that the reboot keeps the original intro music too:
Glorious.
It will be fascinating to see how Ferdinand and the other celebrities get on, so hopefully it's a case of weeks rather than months before we see the Crystal Maze 2016.
