Manchester United are set to experience a busy end to the transfer window, with it likely that there will be a number of incomings and outgoings before Friday's deadline.

The club look to be finally in a position to confirm the signing of Manuel Ugarte, having been locked in negotiations with PSG for a number of weeks over a deal worth up to €60million. It is likely that this purchase will be supplemented via sales, with Scott McTominay the most obvious example.

The Scotland international looks set to join Napoli in a deal worth around £25million. While McTominay was never a nailed on starter at Old Trafford, he has proven to be an important squad player over the last number of seasons.

As a result, some are questioning the decision to move him on.

Manchester United needed to clear the books somewhat this summer, with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood, and Raphael Varane having all left the club in order to make room for new signings.

While many of their sales seemed like obvious moves, some are less convinced that the decision to sell Scott McTominay is a wise one.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Rio Ferdinand suggested that squad players such as McTominay were key for clubs if they are to compete for major honours on a consistent basis. He used Ireland's John O'Shea as one of the examples of player who have filled that role at Old Trafford in the past.

I look at Scott McTominay, and not every player can be a star standout player or a franchise player.

I always say this, to win the league you need the likes of a John O’Shea, a Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher, Chicharito, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from when we were at United.

Or you need the likes of [Julian] Alvarez when he was at [Manchester] City, who can come in. Like last season Jeremy Doku was coming in and impacting games even though not necessarily always starting all the games.

Those players are huge. You need those players and they understand the DNA, especially the ones who come through the academy. Man United have always stood by that.

It really doesn’t sit well with me. To replace him you are going to have to spend, £30m, £40m, £50m and it’s not going to be cheap to replace him.

Manchester United were certainly adept at filling their first team squad with valuable and versatile players who were happy to fill backup roles during the club's most successful period, something that got them over the line in big competitions on more than one occasion.

It remains to be seen if the decision to sell McTominay will backfire over the coming months and years.
