The BBC tonight screened an overwhelming documentary entitled Being Mum and Dad, focussing on Rio Ferdinand's battle to deal with the loss of his wife and raise his three young children. Ferdinand lost his wife Rebecca to cancer in 2015, and this documentary charts his attempts to come to terms with such an absurd and arcane circumstance, while at the same time providing for his kids. It is an utterly extraordinary piece of filmmaking, heartwrenching in its portrayal of Ferdinand's plight and vital in the conversation it will trigger about openness and honesty among men who have lost their wives.
Among the most moving scenes was this, as Ferdinand broke down while talking to counselors about the prospect of starting group session with he and his children. The confusion, heartbreak and frustration is overwhelming.
