Richie Towell is a name that has fallen out of the consciousness of a lot of Irish football fans, but he has quietly been having a strong season in the Championship. On loan at Rotherham from Brighton, he has been one of the bright spots in a tricky season for the Yorkshire club.

He has notched four goals and two assists in 22 league appearances, playing in a central midfield or 'number 10' role. With his contract at Brighton expiring at the end of the season, he is unlikely to have a future at the Premier League club.

Speaking to The Star, Towell confirmed that he would like to extend his stay at Rotherham beyond the current campaign:

I'd definitely like that to happen. I love it here. I've always enjoyed my time here.

I love playing under this manager and with this group of players. It'a a good place to be. I'm living in Leeds, which is a nice city.

There's a real feel-good factor here. It's a nice place to come in to to train every day.

Currently sitting in the relegation zone, but only on goal difference, Towell will be hoping to lead Rotherham to safety over the final 13 games.

Having spent almost all of last season on loan at Rotherham as well, the club tried to make his deal a permanent one in January. While that did not come to fruition, the former Dundalk man is still optimistic about his future at the club:

For one thing or another, it just didn't work out in January. It was unfortunate because I would have liked to have got things done.

I was disappointed it didn't happen. I'm out of contract at Brighton at the end of the season. I have a young family and another baby on the way, so it's not ideal to be out of contract at the end of the season.

I'm the type of person who just gets on with it. I work as hard as I can every single day and hopefully if I keep putting in performances like that against Wednesday the gaffer here will try to sign me again in the summer.
