'It's A Hard One To Take' - Richie Towell On His Frustrating Time So Far At High-Flying Brighton

Richie Towell has just one aim right now - it's to play for Brighton.

Speculation that he might make Martin O'Neill's Euro 2016 squad was 'ludicrous' according to the 24-year-old.

Since moving to the Championship side, the former Dundalk player has made just one appearance. That was back in January's loss to Hull in the FA Cup third round. Of late, Towell hasn't even been able to get on the bench - the arrival of Steve Sidwell at the club certainly hasn't helped in that respect.

Speaking to the Irish Post, Towell admitted that he has not played as much as he would have liked - but that he knew limited opportunities might be a possibility early in his time at Brighton.

Still, he doesn't regret the move.

Coming here wasn’t a tough decision. Obviously, I had offers to go elsewhere and to be fair I kind of had a good think about it and decided to stay in Dundalk because it was the best thing for my career.

But as soon as Brighton came in for me I had a look at the place, the ambitions of the manager and the owner it was an easy decision.

If I had of turned something like this down I think it would have been a step backwards in my career.

Towell has been impressed with manager Chris Hughton in his time at the club. He enjoys the intensity of the training sessions.

The midfielder now knows that he also has to impress Hughton.

It’s a hard one to take. But I know that I have to work really hard, keep trying to impress the manager and keep pushing the lads for a spot and it’s something that I’m willing to do.

I feel as fit as I have been in my career. I’m just ready to go, I just need to bide my time and be patient.

Towell signed for Brighton in late November - though was not available for selection until the opening of the January transfer window.

Still, in December, he was able to train with the club. In the time since, he feels that his game has improved.

Definitely, I think my knowledge of the game has come on. Purely from listening to other players in the squad and the things that they have been through in their careers.

These are players who have played in the Premier League. When they are chatting to you and telling you little tips, you are just taking everything on board because they have been there and done it.
